  1. What is that? Is it a fossel / fossal / fostle (I could do a search for the word, as you can tell I am having spelling brain fade) only I think I will leave it for you to see my attempts and for your reply. 😀

    • Fossil is the word. I had to check I hadn’t made another typo but all is as it should be. The Oxford Concise Dictionary definition is “the remains or impression of a plant or animal hardened in rock” . . . from a previous geological era, I would add. Thanks 🙂

  2. Thank you my friend. I am a late learner of many words Alastair, learning what would be considered elementary level from the books my children brought home from primary school. The first book I read all the way through was in my mid 20’s and it was The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. I knew about plants, nature, the sound of a wood pigeon compared to a collared dove, well before I knew how to write what would be considered “normal”, but now I have progressed well past the “normal” level, right back to the wonders of nature and seeing the reactions prior to rain within the petals of a chickweed.

    • What a great book to start with. I looked up the dictionary definition in my studio dictionary and it seemed clear and concise. Unfortunately my reply would not send for some reason. Back in the house I looked up another dictionary (Collins) but the explanation was confusing to say the least and twice as long. Back in the studio again I went for the original definition but still couldn’t send the reply (weird). So after much to-ing and fro-ing I eventually got a reply to you – it just seems nuts that any dictionary would be so confusing when their purpose is to enlighten.
So what is the reaction (or should that be pre-action) of chickweed petals to rain? sounds fascinating.

  3. The petals of chickweed close when it is about to rain, same as the less common scarlet pimpernel petals that close on the tiny ickle wiff o’ rain and take on the beautiful look of love sent rose buds.
