My Walk this Week 239 – Happy New Year

Happy New Year to all my StillWalks® followers and visitors. My walk this week is a hopeful one that takes you out of the woods and into the open.

The sound track for this short video was not going to be as it is. When recording the short clip in the woods at Llyn Llech Owain a helicopter flew overhead (as you can hear) – this prompted me to record a separate sound clip after it had passed.

However, it occurred to me that the helicopter might be considered symbolic of the past year in that it was likely to be an emergency flight taking someone to hospital. I doubt very much that we are out of the woods yet with the coronavirus. Even with the vaccine it will take time to immunise the population and we need to keep our fingers crossed that the vaccine will do the trick.

So out of the woods and into the open . . . Llyn Llech Owain is a local country park on one of those currently rare bright cold days, we and other families carefully kept socially distanced as we enjoyed the sounds of the geese on the lake, the peace of no traffic in the background, and the moon rising as the sun set (at the end of the video in the top left corner).

  1. How very wonderful to see and hear my corner of the Pacific Northwest in your corner way up there in the northeast – as the geese fly. I particularly enjoy your take on how chopper blades can go from unplanned interruption to companion for your piece. I do so admire & resonate with your work & wish you all you are deserving of and what ever it is your dream ~ Diane

    • Thank you Diane. The interconnections are everywhere all the time. I would love more people to understand that but sometimes I think I may be obsessed and unrealistic about what I consider reality. I would enjoy a proper conversation sometime (Zoom, Teams, whatever) if we could coordinate times. I’m very busy in the next 2 or 3 weeks but if you are happy to name a date …. email me. Happy New Year.

  2. I’ve wished you elsewhere on social media I believe, but it helps to do it again here—best wishes for the year to come, Alastair, and here’s to lots more virtual walks! And let’s not forget about the artwork…

    • Thank you Chris on all accounts. You know I enjoy your book reviews, not least your most recent on Flowers for Algernon which I am sure I read many many years ago. I guess I will need to reread it sometime. Here’s to many more reviews this year – and other events in the year ahead.

  3. Wonderful to see and hear your local country park, Alastair. The nicely flowing water in the stream, the quiet woods. Then the helicopter presence–I so appreciated your symbolism. Liked hearing the geese, seeing them. And what I espec. loved was that serene and vast watery landscape. Thanks for the video and photos, and sending you a happy new year, my friend.

    • Thank you Jet. It is a place we enjoy very much though it turned out afterwards that we shouldn’t have travelled in that short distance according to our lockdown rules. We didn’t realise that at the time. I hope 2021 is good for you. HNY

    • Thanks Michael. I couldn’t cope without my walks but if I had to I would go on a Safari in our garden (not for the first time). Enjoy a walk but keep safe.
