Rising and Receding Waters

Water levels rise incredibly quickly but it can take a lot longer for them to recede.

The peak of the water level in the River Wye at Hereford was probably several days before we arrived there and as can be seen, it covered the park and playing fields nearby. We were unable to complete our walk on a circuitous route because we were not waiting suitable shoes for the mud the flood had left. I suspect it will be some time before it is practical to play on the fields again.

Aware of the Water – Hereford and the River Wye

The River Wye is another river that swells with flood water on a regular basis.

Like the Ouse in this week’s featured StillWalks video the Wye collects water from a wide area and sometimes there is just too much to contain and so, despite flood defences, the water spills onto the surrounding land.

We visited Hereford again recently to take my daughter back to university. We were lucky enough to have good weather for the trip and had time in the afternoon for a walk along the river. The footpath, however, was very muddy from the recent floods and we were not well enough shod to squelch our way through it.

A Change of Scene

Moving away from Lliw Reservoir which has featured a lot in my recent posts, I have some new photos from Hereford. We drove up there last week for my daughter’s final interview for university. She has since been accepted by all five to which she applied – clever girl 🙂

Although the roads in Hereford seemed very busy during mid week, this small city is very attractive in parts with the cathedral being central. The colour of the stone is beautiful and changes with the light (naturally). It was a dull day when we were there but that didn’t spoil what was a pleasant and successful day out. I wonder if we will be seeing more of it – depends on Hannah’s choice really! You can see her blog here.

Here we go then, as promised, some photos from Hereford Cathedral which we visited last Saturday. We must go again to see more, particularly the Mappa Mundi. It was frustrating not to have more time.

The “Corona” above the altar – designed and made by Simon Beer, Siversmith, of Lewes in Sussex and paid for by the Friends of Hereford Cathedral. It was assembled on the crossing floor in late 1992 and dedicated in December.

A Visit to Hereford

First I must tell everyone that the StillWalks website is currently offline due to a hacking attack. 🙁 I hope to have it back up and running by the end of the week. This blog is still going as is the Facebook page and Flickr.

Another trip to a new place – this time to visit Hereford College of Art with my daughter who will be starting a degree in applied arts next year.

The college was very good and the lecturers very enthusiastic. Hereford was a great place too. We visited the Museum and Art Gallery and the cathedral and were very impressed. The gallery had an exhibition on called Emerge from the Made in the Middle organisation and the cathedral was a fascinating place. We will have to visit again.

Here are some photos from last weekend’s Green Fayre at the National Waterfront Museum in Swansea. They can also be seen on Flickr.

All in all the fair went well but I look forward to a weekend off sometime. Not this weekend though as we are off to Hereford tomorrow for a College of Art open day and exhibition – not a bad way to be busy 😉 It’s another place I have never been so I’m looking forward to it – I should probably take my camera!
