These two photos were taken with my old Fuji FinePix compact camera which had a chrome effect setting (different to the b & w setting). I was playing around with it one day in Galloway, South West Scotland a few years ago but the effect you see isn’t so much the cause of the camera setting as the weather and light itself.

My recent Production Day post about how quickly the weather can change these days reminded me of some photography I had done a few years ago in South West Scotland. I guess any outdoor photography has an element of weather to it but these photos are quite a personal reminder of a place I love and don’t see often enough. These, amongst other images play across my large iMac screen as a screensaver in the background when I have to work on my laptop. They were taken on my old Fuji compact but are effective nonetheless.

First it was on, then it was off . . . then it was on again! The weather, these days, is unpredictable. Last Friday when we went to do our recce for the latest production with the Sights and Sounds of the Countryside project, the conditions led us to postpone the following day’s work.
Heavy Weather
However, Saturday was dry, and not only that, almost all the snow had gone! So with a quick announcement on Facebook and email, we went ahead with what turned out to be a great production day, even though we were not able to cover everything required and will have to go back next week. Fingers crossed for dry weather again.

This is the final image from this short series and just about my favourite. This may be because of the weaving part of my life (see www. acmd.co.uk) and my enthusiasm for texture and fibre.
The image seems to loose some of its depth and become more a network of fibres on a more two dimensional plain, albeit with heavy texture. I’m not sure that the fact there is snow involved makes any difference either – the “fibres” would still be there without it, perhaps less defined by lower contrast.
I wrote “tangled fibres” originally but changed it to “network of fibres” because I realised that they are not tangled but have structure and direction, all feeding into the centre of the frame. I cannot say, now, if this was coincidental or intentional – I suspect subconsciously intentional with my artist/weaver’s eye searching out the structures and patterns before taking the shot.

The return route I took – the fences, whether wooden or metal, are trying to emulate the trees’ crooked branches!
