Reviewing the Week 2

The last of my images for this week is a final view of Penarth Pier against the rising sun on a grey day. Also featured is a slideshow of the images I have posted through the week. I would also like to connect to another blog this week – that of Lightscapes Nature Photography. I get frustrated when I see overworked photography with that slickly unreal appearance and no texture – it seems to be used a lot commercially. However, that is not the case with Kerry Mark Leibowitz’s photography of landscapes and on top of that, there is good reading and advice to had as well.

Monochrome Proportions and Light

The first image below is not monochrome but you would be forgiven for thinking it is. I admit to taking the saturation down a bit but most of the effect comes from the direction of sunlight  (yes, sunlight) and the angle of the camera. There was also quite a weird light in the sky anyway (as can be seen in my first post this week), and this has also contributed to these images.

Up On The Downs – Looking at The Worm’s Head

My “story” this week features photos taken earlier this year at a time when the weather was as changeable as it is now in Autumn. The Worm’s Head, a spit of rock at the end of Gower Peninsula, is seen here from a vantage point up on Rhossili Downs – why are they called Downs?

The weather throughout the day, as can be seen below, changed from hazy but bright sunshine to overcast cloud with a threatening mist. At times the colour was strong with a blu sky, at others it almost disappeared, hence the monochrome image at the bottom.

Up On The Downs – Looking at The Worm's Head

Black and White Bird in a Colour Landscape

Colour is almost not there in this Black Headed Gull but there is colour in the landscape below. The bottom image  shows both the colour and lack of colour in the Loughor Estuary landscape on this particular day.

My monochrome post about this place earlier this week was prompted by the lack of colour in the estuary at the time those photos were taken. This image proves the difference under light and shade on a day of changeable weather.

Monochrome Estuary

The river Lliw reaches the sea in the Loughor Estuary. The photos I took below were of course originally in colour. On the day they were taken, however, the weather was such that the colour of the landscape did not reveal itself much from this particular angle  shot. All hues were muted and yet there was plenty of contrast between land and sky.

Black and white / monochrome? You might expect these images to have been produced in monochrome but in fact the last one is the only one that I felt merited the change from colour.

I like the subtleness of the colour in the first two and although I tried the third in B&W and made the necessary adjustments, I found the blue at the bottom of that tyre well to be just right along with the a-concentric curves of the layered rubber.
