My walk this week is around a small central area of city of Bristol next to Temple Meads railway station. I had been for an interview with the Theo Moorman Charitable Trust for an award of funding towards developing new work in my tapestry weaving – the application was successful I am pleased to say.
It was a sunny day and my next appointment for the day was later in the day in Newport where I ended up with another short walk – see last week’s posts. So I took the opportunity to have a little explore of the architecture around me.
I’m not very comfortable doing photography with a lot of people around and you might think from the photos below that I had nothing to worry about. I don’t know how I managed it but somehow I have avoided 99% of the many people that were enjoying the sunshine along with me. Perhaps the evidence of them will be more obvious in the soundscape to be posted on Friday at the end of my walk this week.
Much of this part of Bristol has changed beyond recognition in the decades I’ve known it, for the better I think, after many years of blitz damage, neglect and unimaginative piecemeal development. While I wouldn’t say there’s any outstanding architecture or urban planning here it has a clean crisp no-nonsense look to it and at least gives a nod to its industrial past in the use of materials.
Your gallery certainly captures what, as an ex-Bristolian, I remember of the area from recent visits, Alastair. I also empathise with your avoidance of including people in shots, not that I’m antisocial or anything, but it seems a bit intrusive on individual privacy. Having said this, I do occasionally include crowds in shots when it suits, as in a short sequence portraying Edinburgh sights on Instagram.

I liked some of your Edinburgh shots but I have been very erratic with IG in recent months due to pressure of deadlines. I hope to visit there later this year.

Congratulations on the award. I too try to avoid people in pictures, unless they add soemthing to the composition.. Interesting photographs, I like the curves of the bottom left picture.
Thank you Cathy. It’s not so much that I deliberately try to avoid people in my shots …… well, alright, maybe it is lol. I liked the twist of the bridge too. Bridge design, especially footbridges, can be quite innovative now.
