My Walk this Week 182 – Ancient Graveyard

My walk this week visits an ancient graveyard in Scotland. Initially I went to see my grandparents and aunt and uncle’s graves, pay my respects and enjoy the rural location.

The graveyard they occupy is not so ancient but the original church and graveyard are less than a minute walk up the country road and it is the most fascinating place!

The minister there, back in the day, was clearly a notable person if the inscription attached above the church entrance is to understood:

ANWOTH OLD KIRK

SAMUEL RUTHERFORD

MINISTER FROM 1627 – 1638

PROFESSOR OF DIVINITY AND PRINCIPAL OF St. MARY’S COLLEGE, 1647-1661;

BURIED IN THE CATHEDRAL GROUNDS, St. Andrews, 1661

COUNSELLOR IN THE WESTMINSTER ASSEMBLY OF DIVINES;

AUTHOR OF FAMOUS “LETTERS” AND “REX LEX”;

PREACHER OF PERMANENT RENOWN;

REFORMER AND DEFENDER OF THE FAITH.

MONUMENT ERECTED TO HIS MEMORY ON THE NEAR-BY HILL, 1842

“FAIR ANWOTH. BY THE SOLWAY”

“GLORY, GLORY DWELLETH IN EMMANUEL’S LAND”

The monument mentioned can be seen in the distance in the fourth image below and the walk up there is a worthwhile and enjoyable use of time.

The inscription above was easy enough to read but those on the tombs inside the church or in the graveyard, are less so. You are welcome to try and decipher some of those words shown – they appear to tell an intriguing story!

I have no soundscape for this walk but the VR image at the bottom of the post was taken with the Google Cardboard app on my phone. If you would like to view it you may download it and import it to the free Google Cardboard app and pop your phone into either the Google Cardboard VR viewer or another VR headset – it is accompanied by sound.
