An Evening with Marsh Grass

The tall marsh grass I enjoyed so much on my walk this week was enhanced by the beautiful evening light and the high tide which flows far up the River Loughor from the estuary. On this evening the level was perfect for a walk – not so high as to cover the surrounding marshes, but high enough to make the river brimful.

The result is a smooth mirror in the middle of the landscape, one that reflects all above and around it – the colours of the sunset and the riverside grasses. The surface was broken onlyContinue reading

My Walk this Week – Sunset On the Water

My walk this week is from my local marshes with a beautiful evening stroll in the sunset reflected on the high tide water in the river.

Marsh Evening

I don’t think I need say any more – enjoy! 🙂

Watching the River

The third of my local walks this week is along the banks of our main local river – the River Loughor. I fought my way across the marsh and through dense brambles and knotweed on one side to reach a point on the eastern bank I hadn’t stood at before.

On finding I wasn’t able to get far along the river due to the brambles, I retraced my steps and crossed the bridge to explore along the western bank at another part of the river I had only seen before, but not walked along.Continue reading

River Loughor

Down By the Riverside

The salt marshes edge the River Loughor as it flows out to the estuary. The footpath down by the riverside is more open now than it was just two or three years ago.

The tall marsh grasses and reeds are no longer there to the extent they used to be as a result of erosion and the trampling of cows. Continue reading

Up Close and Grassy

marsh grass patterns

One of the main features on my walks on our local salt marsh back in 2010 was the marsh grass, their profusion and tallness. As mentioned in my previous walk here from the past (Past Walks 4), the grasses were all trampled to nothing by cows in the years between then and now. Hopefully they will return permanently to their former glory. Continue reading

My Walk this Week, Past Walks 6 – Salt Marshes

Marsh path 2010

My walk this week is the last of six walks from the past (2010 in this instance) and takes another look back at a place I love to walk, namely our local salt marsh on the River Loughor estuary. I posted a couple of weeks ago about this marsh in 2011 but the experience and images were quite different to those I am posting about the place just one year before. Continue reading

Castell Ddu – Reviewing the Walk

Returning to my starting point in my local park on my walk this week, I had a last glimpse of the marshes on the Loughor Estuary. The light was still strong as there was not a cloud to be seen and the air was clear.

Reviewing the walk, I am reminded that although I have called it the Castell Ddu Walk, the castle, or what remains of it does not feature in the images other than the related nearby motte situated at the side of the motorway. The link and quoted text below gives some information on the place.
